The Best Time to Schedule Your Newborn Session (and Why It Matters) | Chesapeake Newborn Photographer | LexLeigh Photography

Newborns change so quickly - one week they’re curled up and sleepy, the next they’re alert and stretching those tiny arms.
To capture that brand-new stage perfectly, timing your newborn session makes all the difference.

The Ideal Window
The sweet spot for newborn photos is within 7–14 days after birth. During this time, babies are:
Sleepier and easier to gently pose
Still have those curled-up, womb-like positions
Less likely to have baby acne or dry skin
Small enough to fit into props/outfits/etc.
Why Not Too Soon?
The first few days home can be overwhelming (and healing takes time). Waiting until day 7 or so gives you a chance to rest, adjust, and settle into your new rhythm before your session.
Lifestyle Sessions Give You Flexibility
If you’re planning an in-home lifestyle session, you have a little more flexibility - up to about 4–6 weeks old. These sessions focus less on posing and more on connection, so it’s perfectly fine if baby is more awake.
When to Book
Most families reserve their newborn session while still pregnant - ideally during the second trimester. We’ll pencil in your due date, then finalize the session once baby arrives.
That way, you’re guaranteed a spot on my calendar no matter when your little one makes their debut.
✨ There’s no such thing as “too early” to plan for your newborn photos - only too late to capture those fleeting first days.
