Pregnancy is a surreal journey, an evolution of emotion because it’s such a life-changing experience! Whether this is your first or your fourth baby, it's so important to document this special time in your life! Here are some things to know before booking your maternity session...
1.) WHAT'S THE BEST TIMING?
I can't speak for every photographer out there, but for myself, I typically book out months in advance as I only take a certain number of clients per month. I always recommend reaching out after you've made it past the delicate first trimester. The sooner you book, the better! Especially if you're considering using a makeup/hair artist, to ensure we are all available for you! As for how far along you are in your pregnancy, that ball is in your court! I do recommend 30-34 weeks so that your bump is visible but you're also not too uncomfortable (yet!). We walk a lot during a session so swollen ankles wont be fun and the closer to birth you get, the more swollen and uncomfortable you'll become!
2.) HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER!
Photography is an art form and each photographer is unique! It's always best to start off by determining what style you like. Do you like Light & Airy, True to color, Bold & Contrast, Dark & Moody? Once you lock down the style you like, it's time to find a photographer with that style that is the right fit for you! It's so important to be able to vibe and get along with your photographer. Get them on the phone, meet them for coffee, spend some time getting to know them and figure out if their personality is a good fit for what you're looking for! Personally, I love to have fun with my cliends and adore when it feels like we are just friends hanging out and I just happened to bring my camera along!
3.) WHAT DO I WEAR?
Personally, I have a huge client closet full of beautiful gowns that you are welcome to try on and use for your session! If you'd like to go your own route, my biggest recommendation is long, flowy dresses! They are flattering on everyone and we can use the extra fabric for some super fun shots! Neutral colors are always best, but dont be afraid to add color in. Just try to avoid any over saturated colors like bright red, orange, yellow, etc. Opt for more dark, rich tones like burgundy, rust, mustard, etc. If you're interested in purchasing your own dress for you session, here are a few of my favorite shops for you to check out - Baltic Born, Morning Lavender, Reclamation, and Lulu's.
4.) HOW MUCH IS A MATERNITY SESSION? DO YOU OFFER NEWBORN AS WELL?
My maternity (and newborn) pricing can be found here. I do offer $50 off each session fee when maternity and newborn are booked together!
5.) "WHAT DO I DO WITH MY HANDS?"
Don't worry, as your photographer I will be posing you from your head to your toes! When it doubt, just cradle the belly...that's why we're here right?! I give you ample direction in posing and will guide you through fun prompts to ensure you are getting the best out of your time with me! I never expect you to know what to do or be a professional model during your session!
6.) CAN MY PARTNER BE INCLUDED? WHAT ABOUT MY OTHER CHILDREN?
Yes and yes! You didn't make that baby on your own, am I right? Incorportaing dad-to-be is always allowed and even recommended! During your session you will get plenty of solo shots as well as with your partner. If you have other children, bring them along! We can get so many cute shots of the future older sibling(s) with the bump!
7.) WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR MATERNITY PHOTOS...
After your session, we will meet for your reveal/ordering appointment where you will see your photos for the first time and choose which ones you want to get digitally, print, frame, and/or add to an album. I am a firm believing in printing your photos and having a tangible product rather than just downloading them onto your computer to never see the light of day! I offer fine art, heirloom pieces that will last a lifetime. It will be so special one day to show your growing child the photos in a timeless photo album!
8.) HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR MATERNITY PHOTOS...
To prepare for your maternity session I have a few things I recommend. First of all, your hands will be showing in most of the images so make sure your hands and nails look clean. You can get a manicure if you want but keep polish light or nude. I also recommend getting your hair and makeup done. I have recommendations for makeup and hair artists in Virginia Beach so let me know if that’s something you want. That way you won’t have much to do to get ready other than put your dress on. Plus makeup artists know how to do makeup for photos which should be a little heavier than you would wear your makeup on a normal day. I will also email a maternity handbook to you after booking with lots of important info/tips!
9.) ENJOY YOURSELF!
Soon you’ll be pampering someone other than yourself, and 100% more literally, so soak up this experience! I am there to capture the precious connection you have with your baby-to-be and that will radiate if you just relax and feel the love. Oh, and make sure you plan a dinner afterwards to get more mileage out of your flawless makeup!
